ASTM A252-90 covers cylindrical pipe piles driven as permanent load-bearing members or as permanent casings for cast-in-place concrete piles — Grades 1/2/3 in welded (ERW, SAW, flash) and seamless manufacture.
Mechanical & Performance Requirements
Grade 1: YS 205 MPa / TS 310 MPa; Grade 2: YS 240 MPa / TS 415 MPa; Grade 3: YS 275 MPa / TS 455 MPa. No chemistry limits specified — strength-based standard.
Dimensional Tolerances
OD tolerance ±1% (larger bands by size class); wall tolerance −12.5% of nominal; straightness suitable for driving; end preparation optional (plain or bevel).
NDE & Hydrostatic Testing
No mandatory hydro/NDT by default — test frequency per purchaser; weld integrity demonstrated through production testing; commonly paired with API 5L-style NDE when specified for marine/foundation work.
