Cement Mortar Lined Steel Pipe

Cement mortar lining is the oldest and most proven internal protection for water pipelines: a dense layer of Portland-cement mortar (6–16 mm) applied centrifugally inside the steel pipe.

The lining does not just cover the steel — it passivates it. The alkaline mortar chemistry stops corrosion electrochemically, self-heals hairline cracks in continuous wet service, and provides a smooth hydraulic surface (Hazen-Williams C ≥ 130) that keeps pumping costs down for decades. Combined with external 3PE, it is the standard package for buried water transmission mains.

Manufacturing Process

Centrifugal shop-lining process per AWWA C205 / BS 534 — dense, smooth mortar with controlled curing and full QC.

1

Pipe Inspection

Steel pipes are inspected for dimensions, weld integrity and mill certificates before lining

2

Internal Surface Preparation

Interior is degreased and loose rust removed to ensure mortar bond to the steel wall

3

Mortar Batching

Potable-grade Portland cement and graded sand are mixed at 1:1 to 1:2 with controlled water

4

Pipe Mounting on Spinner

The pipe is clamped into the centrifugal spinning machine and rotation begins

5

Centrifugal Lining

Mortar is fed inside the rotating pipe; centrifugal force packs it densely against the wall

6

Surface Finishing

A trowel head smooths the lining to a uniform, hydraulically efficient surface

7

Curing

Moist curing or continuous misting develops strength and prevents shrinkage cracks

8

External Coating (if specified)

3PE, FBE or liquid epoxy is applied externally per DIN 30670 / AWWA C213

9

External Holiday Test

100% of the external coating is spark-tested where an external system is applied

10

Thickness Inspection

Lining thickness is gauged at four points per joint against the diameter class

11

Cube Strength Testing

Mortar cubes from each batch are crushed at 7 and 28 days for acceptance

12

Marking, Packing & Dispatch

Pipes are marked, capped, strapped and dispatched with full QC documentation

Epoxy Lining vs Cement Mortar vs Dual System: Which Do You Need?

Internal protection for water service comes down to a choice between thin-film organic coatings, thick passive cement mortar, or the combination of both worlds.

EPOXY

Liquid Epoxy Lining

Thin-film internal epoxy (AWWA C210) for lightly corrosive service and smaller diameters. Smooth but a single film — holidays must be repaired before service.

CEMENT

Cement Mortar Lining

Thick passive lining per AWWA C205 / BS 534. Alkaline environment passivates the steel, micro-cracks self-heal in wet service, 50+ year track record in water mains.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does cement mortar lining protect the pipe?+
The mortar creates a highly alkaline environment (pH ~12) at the steel surface, which passivates the steel and stops corrosion electrochemically — no film to break down. It also forms a physical barrier, and hairline micro-cracks self-heal by autogenous re-cementation in continuous wet service.
Which standards govern your cement lined pipe?+
Shop-applied lining follows AWWA C205 (or BS 534 / EN 10224 for UK and European projects), with in-place rehabilitation per AWWA C602. External anti-corrosion, when specified, follows DIN 30670 (3PE) or AWWA C213 (FBE).
Is the lining safe for drinking water?+
Yes — we use drinking-water grade Portland cement and washed graded sand with no leachable contaminants. Formulation certification (NSF/ANSI 61-equivalent) is available for potable projects.
What lining thickness do I need?+
Typically 6 mm for pipes up to 24″, 8–10 mm up to 36″, 10–13 mm up to 48″, and 13–16 mm above — thicker linings are available for abrasive slurry or aggressive sewage. We recommend per the governing standard and service.
Will the lining crack?+
Controlled hairline shrinkage cracks (≤ 0.3 mm) are normal and acceptable per AWWA C205 — they self-heal in wet service. Structural cracks from poor curing are prevented by controlled moist curing and are cause for rejection.
What is the effect on flow capacity?+
A smooth troweled lining gives Hazen-Williams C of about 130 or better — comparable to new unlined steel and far superior to tuberculated old mains. Pumping energy savings typically pay back the lining cost within years.
Can you line large-diameter pipe?+
Yes — up to 3048 mm (120″) OD in our centrifugal shop lining lines, covering most water transmission sizes. Larger or irregular sections can be hand-troweled or lined in place per AWWA C602.
How is quality verified on every pipe?+
Every joint gets lining thickness measurement at four points, full visual inspection, and surface smoothness checks; mortar cubes from each batch are crushed at 7 and 28 days. External coatings receive 100% holiday testing. Full QC documentation is supplied.
Can you combine the lining with 3PE external coating?+
Yes — that is the standard buried-water package: cement mortar inside for the water side, 3PE (DIN 30670) outside for the soil side, delivered from one facility with one warranty.
What is the MOQ and lead time?+
MOQ is typically 50 tons per size. Common water-main diameters ship in 3–7 weeks depending on season; rehabilitation project quantities are scheduled per site program. Contact us for a firm quotation.
