ASTM A53/A53M-18 covers seamless (Type S), ERW (Type E) and furnace-welded (Type F) black and hot-dip galvanized steel pipe NPS 1/8–NPS 26, Grades A and B — the general-purpose utility pipe standard for mechanical, pressure and ordinary uses.
Mechanical & Performance Requirements
Grade A: TS min 330 MPa, YS min 205 MPa; Grade B: TS min 415 MPa, YS min 240 MPa. Chemistry caps: C 0.25/0.30% (S/E/F types), Mn 0.95/1.20%, P 0.05%, S 0.045%; bend and flattening tests on ERW; elongation per Table with size deductions.
Dimensional Tolerances
OD tolerance per standard ASTM pipe table (±0.4 to ±1% by size); wall: −12.5% minimum wall; galvanized coating weight per ASTM A123/A153 class; length: random or specified with ±6 mm on cut lengths by agreement.
NDE & Hydrostatic Testing
100% hydrostatic test without leakage through weld seam or body (5 s hold minimum; e.g. 19,300 kPa cap for NPS 3+); NDE (Type E, NPS 2+, not from hot-stretch mill): weld-seam ultrasonic or electromagnetic test per ASTM E213/E273/E309/E570 covering full volume.
