ASTM A179/A179M-90a (reapproved) covers minimum-wall seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer apparatus, OD 12.7–76 mm (1/2–3 in) — the baseline heat-exchanger tube spec.
Mechanical & Performance Requirements
TS min 325 MPa; YS min 180 MPa; elongation min 35% (longitudinal strip)/25% (round specimen, reduced for small sizes). Chemistry: C 0.06–0.18%, Mn 0.27–0.63%, P/S 0.035%.
Dimensional Tolerances
Minimum-wall construction: wall −0/+20% above minimum; OD tolerance ±0.10 to ±0.13 mm for small ODs (tight exchanger-tube tolerances); length and straightness per A450.
NDE & Hydrostatic Testing
100% hydrostatic test per A450; NDE (ultrasonic or eddy-current) may substitute or supplement by agreement; flaring and flattening tests on each lot.
