ASTM A333/A333M-2016 covers seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe for low-temperature service (down to −45 °C and below by grade), Grades 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 — Grade 6 is the workhorse for LNG/cold-climate piping.
Mechanical & Performance Requirements
Grade 6: TS min 415 MPa, YS min 240 MPa; CVN impact required at design temperature (e.g. Grade 6 transverse ≥13 J at −45 °C for most sizes) with size-dependent allowances; normalized (N) heat treatment standard.
Dimensional Tolerances
OD/wall per ASTM A530 (±1% OD, −12.5% wall min-wall basis); impact-test specimen location and size reductions per Table rules.
NDE & Hydrostatic Testing
100% hydrostatic test; NDE (ultrasonic/eddy-current) for welded seam and body when specified; impact testing is the core acceptance gate, with retest rules per section 11.
