ASTM A500 covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing in round, square, rectangular and special shapes — the dominant HSS (hollow structural sections) spec for North American construction, Grades A/B/C/D.
Mechanical & Performance Requirements
Round tubing: Grade B TS 400 MPa / YS 290 MPa; Grade C TS 425 MPa / YS 315 MPa. Shaped tubing: Grade B TS 400 / YS 320 MPa; Grade C TS 425 / YS 345 MPa. Elongation 23–25% by grade/specimen.
Dimensional Tolerances
Wall: max 10% under specified wall at any point; flattening test for round tubing (3-step: weld ductility, ductility, soundness); corner radii for shaped sections; straightness and length tolerances per Table 4/5.
NDE & Hydrostatic Testing
No mandatory NDE — acceptance via tension, flattening (round) and chemistry; weld soundness proven by the flattening regime.
