Four Standards, Two Different Jobs
Galvanizing standards split into two families that buyers constantly mix up: after-fabrication hot-dip galvanizing (the part is made, then dipped) and continuous/pre-galvanized product coating (the strip or tube is coated in-line before forming). Choosing the wrong reference in a spec is one of the most common zinc-related claims.

| Standard | Family | Region | Key Requirement (thick sections) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 1461 | After-fabrication HDG | International | ≥ 6 mm steel: avg ≥ 85 µm (local ≥ 70 µm) |
| ASTM A123 | After-fabrication HDG | USA | ≥ 6.4 mm structural: min avg coating grade 100 (100 µm) |
| GB/T 13912 | After-fabrication HDG | China | Mirrors ISO 1461 structure and limits |
| ASTM A653 | Continuous sheet (pre-galv) | USA | Coating designations e.g. G90 = 0.90 oz/ft² total both sides |
| EN 10240 | Tube internal/external coatings | Europe | Zinc coating types for steel tubes, e.g. Zn 250/500 g/m² classes |
Why the Distinction Matters
Specifying ASTM A123 on pipe that is galvanized before threading and fabrication, or ISO 1461 on a coil-based pre-galv product, creates an unfulfillable requirement — the processes physically cannot meet the other family’s measurement and thickness rules. For hot-dip galvanized pipe in China, the practical route is GB/T 13912 (aligned with ISO 1461) with ASTM A123 acceptance cited for US-facing projects where the mill supports it.
Thickness Is the Acceptance Currency
All after-fabrication standards accept the coating by magnetic-gauge thickness readings (average plus local minimum). Write the governing standard and thickness table into the PO, and make coating-thickness reports a release condition in the inspection plan. Visual criteria (continuous, smooth, free of flux and acid traps) apply in parallel — darker fully-alloyed surfaces are compliant if thickness passes.
PO formula that ends the arguments: “HDG per ISO 1461 (or ASTM A123 for US project), average ≥ 85 µm on ≥ 6 mm sections, thickness report per lot.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GB/T 13912 equivalent to ISO 1461?
Functionally yes — it follows the same thickness tables and acceptance logic for Chinese production. International tenders normally accept it with the ISO reference cited.
What about ASTM A653 on pipe?
A653 covers continuously galvanized sheet — relevant to pre-galv tube formed from coated strip, not to after-fabrication dipped pipe. Different product, different performance.
Which gives thicker zinc — ISO or A123?
For thick sections they are close (85 vs 100 µm average); A123 grades run slightly higher for structural shapes. The bigger determinant is steel chemistry (Si content) and kettle dwell.
