Induction Pipe Bends (3D–6D)

Hot induction bends hot-formed from API 5L line pipe in X42 to X80 — the long-radius direction changes that transmission pipelines are built with. Bend radii from 3D to 6D as standard, with tangent lengths, ovality and wall-thinning controlled per ASME B16.49.

Induction Pipe Bends (3D–6D)

Where a pipeline changes direction, a field weld at a mitered joint is the weakest point of the system. A hot induction bend replaces it with one continuous piece of pipe, bent hot on an induction line with its properties re-validated after bending. CREATEEL produces bends from 6" to 64" in radii of 3D–6D (other radii and angles to 180° on request) for transmission pipelines and plant piping.

Bends are made from API 5L PSL2 line pipe (X42–X80) and ASTM A106/A333 seamless pipe, quenched and tempered after bending where the grade requires it. Wall thinning, ovality and flattening are measured and reported against ASME B16.49 and project pipeline codes including CSA Z662.

Every CREATEEL fitting is shipped with full heat-number traceability from raw material certificate to the stamped marking on the piece itself. Dimensional reports, heat treatment charts and EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificates are issued as standard, with 3.2 certification by third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) available on request before shipment.

Types & Range

3D bend
Tightest common pipeline radius — for constrained right-of-way sections.
6D bend
Lower friction and easier pigging — the default for large transmission lines.
Compound / multi-radius
Two radii in one bend piece for complex route geometry.

Materials & Standards

Bends are manufactured from line pipe in the project grade — typically API 5L PSL2 X52 to X70 for gas transmission, with Charpy toughness inherited and re-verified after forming. Anti-corrosion (3PE/FBE) and concrete weight coating can be applied after forming.

Standards in brief: ASME B16.49 for design, manufacturing and inspection of induction bends; parent pipe to API 5L PSL2; certification to EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2.

Manufacturing Process

Hot induction bending line for ASME B16.49 pipeline bends — one continuous pipe, no welds in the arc, properties re-validated after bending.

1

Pipe Selection

Line pipe per API 5L PSL2 with full MTC; extended-length heats selected for Q&T lots.

2

Coating Removal & Prep

Coating stripped from the arc zone; pipe ends prepped for tangent welding.

3

Induction Heating

A narrow annular band is heated to ~1000°C by medium-frequency induction while the pipe advances.

4

Hot Bending

The pipe is pushed through the heating ring and clamped to the radius arm — the bend forms continuously, degree by degree.

5

Cooling (Quench)

Water spray quenches the arc zone immediately behind the coil, locking a fine-grained structure.

6

Tempering

The complete bend is furnace tempered to restore toughness and yield per grade (Q&T for X65+).

7

Geometry & NDT

Angle, radius, ovality and thinning measured; UT/MT on the arc and welds; hardness survey.

8

Marking & Coating

As-built angle and radius stencilled; FBE/3PE recoated or left bare for field coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an induction bend?
A pipe bent hot exactly where a medium-frequency induction coil heats it — a smooth, continuous radius with no welds inside the bend. Manufactured to ASME B16.49.
Why choose an induction bend over welded elbows?
No circumferential welds inside the change of direction — fewer NDT points, lower pressure drop and better erosion resistance; ideal for long pipelines.
What bend radii can you produce?
3D, 4D, 5D and 6D as standard (up to 10D and compound bends on request), with bend angles up to 180°.
What pipe sizes and wall thicknesses do you cover?
NPS 2″–48″ as standard, larger diameters up to 64″ on request; wall from Sch 10 to XXS — see the dimension table above.
Does the wall thickness change in the bend?
Yes — stretching thins the outside (extrados) and thickens the inside (intrados). We select the starting wall so the minimum thickness after bending still meets the design code.
What materials and grades do you bend?
API 5L X42–X80 PSL2 line pipe, ASTM A106 B, A333 Gr.6 and equivalents; every heat is bend-qualified with test coupons.
How is quality verified after bending?
Tensile and impact tests on coupons bent with the production pipe, hardness survey, 100% UT, and dimensional check of radius, angle and ovality; EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
Can bends be supplied coated?
Yes — 3LPE, 3LPP or FBE applied after bending, with bare ends for field welding and end caps for transport.
What is your MOQ and lead time?
Flexible — project quantities preferred but small sets welcome. Typical production 25–45 days depending on diameter, wall and coating.
What marking and documentation come with the goods?
Per B16.49: heat number, grade, wall, radius and angle; MTC 3.1, bend qualification records and packing list.
