Pipe Manufacturing Types
Standard Testing Requirements (API 5L)
Manufacturing Process
Our seamless steel pipes are manufactured through a rigorously controlled 12-step hot rolling process — from billet heating to final inspection — ensuring uniform mechanical properties, precise dimensions, and defect-free surfaces.
Billet Inspection & Cutting
Continuous-cast round billets are ultrasonically tested for internal defects, then cut to required lengths by abrasive sawing or shearing.
Rotary Hearth Heating
Billets are heated uniformly to 1200–1280°C in a rotary hearth furnace to achieve optimal plasticity for piercing while preventing overheating or decarburization.
Mannesmann Piercing
The heated billet is pierced over a pointed mandrel between two skewed rolls to form a hollow shell (mother tube), typically achieving a 3–4:1 elongation ratio.
Mandrel Mill Rolling
The hollow shell is rolled over a retained mandrel through a 5–8 stand continuous mandrel mill to reduce wall thickness and achieve uniform OD/WT dimensions.
Mandrel Extraction & Reheating
The mandrel is stripped from the shell; the shell is then reheated to ~950°C in an induction furnace before entering the stretch-reducing mill.
Stretch Reducing / Sizing
The pipe passes through 20–24 stands of stretch-reducing mill to achieve the final OD with tight tolerance (±0.5% OD) and uniform wall thickness, without an internal mandrel.
Cooling Bed Cooling
Pipes are transferred to a walking-beam cooling bed for slow, uniform air cooling to prevent bending and residual stress buildup.
Hot/Cold Straightening
Pipes are straightened by multi-roll cross-roll straighteners (6-roll or 10-roll) to achieve straightness ≤1 mm/m and eliminate ovality.
Cutting & End Facing
Pipes are cut to commercial lengths (5.8m/6m/11.8m/random) and both ends are faced and beveled (30°+5°) for welding, with burrs removed.
NDT & Hydrostatic Testing
100% ultrasonic testing for wall thickness and laminations, eddy current testing for surface cracks, and hydrostatic pressure testing to API/GB standards.
Surface Inspection & Marking
Visual and dimensional inspection of OD, WT, length, and surface quality; stenciling grade, heat number, OD×WT, standard, and manufacturer mark.
Final Packaging & Shipping
Pipes are bundled with steel strips, end-protected with plastic caps or bevel protectors, slung with lifting tags, and loaded for shipment with mill test certificates.
Applications
Where our products deliver proven performance across industries worldwide.
High-Pressure Gas Transmission
Seamless line pipe eliminates the weld seam entirely for the highest-pressure gas transmission segments, tie-ins, and compressor station piping where weld inspection burden must be minimized.
✓ API 5L PSL2 X42–X70
Sour Service Gathering Systems
Seamless PSL2 in restricted chemistries with HIC/SSC qualification handles raw sour gas gathering where wet H2S attacks weld seams first.
✓ NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156
Offshore Riser & Platform Piping
Platform piping, flexible-joint spools, and short offshore crossings use seamless for reliability and code acceptance in critical, hard-to-repair service.
✓ DNV / API RP 1111 options
Wellhead & Flowline Tie-Ins
Seamless flowlines and wellhead tie-ins handle high pressure, temperature cycling, and mechanical loads close to the wellbore.
✓ API 5L / 5CT transition sizes
City Gate & Distribution Interconnects
High-pressure city gate stations and distribution interconnects use seamless for valve manifolds and sections where radiography of welds is impractical.
✓ ASME B31.8 locations classes
Arctic & Seismic Zones
Charpy-tested low-temperature seamless grades handle arctic construction and high-seismicity routes where strain demand exceeds welded-pipe capability.
✓ CVN tested to -45°C
Frequently Asked Questions
What is seamless line pipe?+
Line pipe made by piercing and rolling a solid billet — no longitudinal weld — specified for the highest pressures and most critical service segments per API 5L.
What sizes are available in seamless line pipe?+
Typically ½" to 24" OD (up to 28" on request), wall to 60 mm, in PSL2 Gr. B–X70 and above.
When is seamless preferred over welded line pipe?+
For the highest pressure classes, sour service, thick walls, short critical segments, arctic toughness demands, and locations where weld inspection logistics are prohibitive.
What standards and grades do you offer?+
API 5L PSL1/PSL2 Gr. B–X80, ISO 3183, GB/T 9711, with sour service (NACE MR0175) and low-temperature Charpy options.
How is seamless line pipe tested?+
Hydrostatic testing of every length, 100% ultrasonic body and end inspection, eddy current on small sizes, plus tensile, Charpy, and flatten tests per lot.
What is the difference between PSL1 and PSL2 seamless?+
PSL2 adds Charpy impact requirements, tighter chemistry limits, a capped yield-to-tensile ratio (≤ 0.92 for X42–X70), and mandatory CVN at design temperature.
Do you provide seamless line pipe with coatings?+
Yes — FBE, dual-FBE, 3PE/3PP and internal epoxy, applied with single-source responsibility and coating QC documentation.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?+
Stock sizes from 5–10 tons; produced sizes typically 6–10 weeks depending on grade and testing. Contact us for a firm quotation.
What documentation is provided?+
EN 10204 3.1 MTCs with heat traceability, full NDT/hydro records, CVN and chemistry reports; 3.2 third-party certification on request.
Can seamless line pipe be used for sour gas?+
Yes, when manufactured to restricted chemistries and tested for HIC/SSC per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — we supply fully qualified sour-service material.
