Cement Mortar Lined Pipe
Centrifugally applied cement-mortar internal lining per AWWA C205 / BS 534 — passive alkaline protection for drinking water, sewage and seawater mains, with a 50+ year service record in water infrastructure worldwide.
Cement Mortar Lined Steel Pipe
Cement mortar lining is the oldest and most proven internal protection for water pipelines: a dense layer of Portland-cement mortar (6–16 mm) applied centrifugally inside the steel pipe.
The lining does not just cover the steel — it passivates it. The alkaline mortar chemistry stops corrosion electrochemically, self-heals hairline cracks in continuous wet service, and provides a smooth hydraulic surface (Hazen-Williams C ≥ 130) that keeps pumping costs down for decades. Combined with external 3PE, it is the standard package for buried water transmission mains.
Centrifugal mortar, 28-day strength ≥ 19.3 MPa
Certified cement formulation, no leachables
Optional one-stop buried-water package

Manufacturing Process
Centrifugal shop-lining process per AWWA C205 / BS 534 — dense, smooth mortar with controlled curing and full QC.
Pipe Inspection
Steel pipes are inspected for dimensions, weld integrity and mill certificates before lining
Internal Surface Preparation
Interior is degreased and loose rust removed to ensure mortar bond to the steel wall
Mortar Batching
Potable-grade Portland cement and graded sand are mixed at 1:1 to 1:2 with controlled water
Pipe Mounting on Spinner
The pipe is clamped into the centrifugal spinning machine and rotation begins
Centrifugal Lining
Mortar is fed inside the rotating pipe; centrifugal force packs it densely against the wall
Surface Finishing
A trowel head smooths the lining to a uniform, hydraulically efficient surface
Curing
Moist curing or continuous misting develops strength and prevents shrinkage cracks
External Coating (if specified)
3PE, FBE or liquid epoxy is applied externally per DIN 30670 / AWWA C213
External Holiday Test
100% of the external coating is spark-tested where an external system is applied
Thickness Inspection
Lining thickness is gauged at four points per joint against the diameter class
Cube Strength Testing
Mortar cubes from each batch are crushed at 7 and 28 days for acceptance
Marking, Packing & Dispatch
Pipes are marked, capped, strapped and dispatched with full QC documentation
Epoxy Lining vs Cement Mortar vs Dual System: Which Do You Need?
Internal protection for water service comes down to a choice between thin-film organic coatings, thick passive cement mortar, or the combination of both worlds.
| Criteria | Liquid Epoxy Lining | Cement Mortar Lining | Cement + External 3PE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Thickness | 200 – 400 μm | 6 – 16 mm | Cement inside + 1.8–3.7 mm 3PE outside |
| Protection Mechanism | Barrier film (organic) | Passive alkaline layer, self-healing | Barrier + passive, inside and out |
| Best Service | Lightly corrosive water, product lines | Potable water, sewage, seawater mains | Buried water transmission mains |
| Hydraulic Roughness | Very smooth (C ≥ 140) | Smooth (C ≥ 130) | Smooth (C ≥ 130) |
| Repairability | Patch kits | Patch mortar / in-situ C602 relining | Patch mortar + external epoxy |
| Relative Cost | $ | $$ | $$$ |
