Butt-Weld Pipe Elbows

Butt-weld elbows change pipeline direction in 45°, 90° and 180° angles with a smooth internal profile that keeps pressure loss and turbulence to a minimum. We supply seamless and welded elbows from 1/2" to 48" in carbon, alloy and stainless steel.

Butt-Weld Pipe Elbows

A butt-weld elbow redirects the pipeline by 45°, 90° or 180° while preserving full flow area and matching pipe wall thickness, so the bend is as strong as the pipe it joins. CREATEEL supplies seamless and welded elbows from 1/2" through 48" in long-radius (3D), short-radius and 3R/5D geometries, in carbon, alloy, stainless and low-temperature steel grades.

Fittings are produced in our Cangzhou manufacturing base on push-pipe and hot-forming lines, with in-house heat treatment and a fully equipped inspection bay. Whether you need a single SCH 160 tie-in piece or full project volumes against ASME B16.9, we quote from stock or production within 24 hours.

Every CREATEEL fitting is shipped with full heat-number traceability from raw material certificate to the stamped marking on the piece itself. Dimensional reports, heat treatment charts and EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificates are issued as standard, with 3.2 certification by third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) available on request before shipment.

  • Radius rule — LR (R=1.5D) is standard; SR (R=1.0D) only where space is tight, as it raises local pressure drop and SIF.
  • Ends — all elbows are supplied with beveled ends per ASME B16.25 for butt-welding; plain or flanged ends on request.
  • Non-reducing is the norm; reducing elbows are specified as reducing with two different end sizes.

Manufacturing Process

High-frequency induction hot forming line for ASME B16.9 elbows — from certified seamless pipe or plate to beveled, heat-treated and fully tested fittings.

1

Raw Material & Inspection

Certified seamless pipe or A516/A283 plate received against EN 10204 3.1 MTCs; heat numbers verified and PMI performed on alloy lots.

2

Cut-off & Bevel Prep

Material cut to calculated blanks by band saw, plasma or lathe with kerf allowance for forming; some grades pre-beveled.

3

Induction Heating

Blanks heated to 950–1100°C in a controlled induction furnace for uniform, repeatable soak before forming.

4

Hot Pushing (LR)

Seamless blanks hot-pushed over a mandrel to form long-radius elbows with smooth bore and consistent wall.

5

Die Forming (SR / 180°)

Short-radius elbows and 180° returns formed in matched dies on hydraulic presses for tight geometry.

6

Hydraulic Bulging

Optional bulge forming for special radii and thin-wall fittings to control ovality and wall thinning.

7

Trim to Center-to-Face

Ends machined to exact A/B center-to-face dimensions per ASME B16.9 with tight outlet tolerance.

8

End Beveling

Ends beveled 37.5° per ASME B16.25; land and root face controlled for qualified welding.

9

Heat Treatment

Normalizing or annealing per grade; N+T mandatory for WP91 and low-temp WPL6; furnace charts recorded.

10

Surface Conditioning

Shot blasting to SA 2.5; rust, scale and oxide removed for coating adhesion and inspection.

11

Dimensional Inspection

Center-to-face, outlet, ovality and wall thickness verified per ASME B16.9 with calibrated gauges.

12

Wall Ultrasonic Test

Body and crotch-zone UT, critical for short-radius elbows where wall thinning is highest.

13

MT / PT Inspection

Magnetic particle or dye-penetrant test on critical surfaces and any weld repairs.

14

Hydrostatic Test

Pressure test per client specification where required, with witnessed records on request.

15

Marking & Traceability

Heat number, grade, size, schedule and standard stamped; fully traceable to MTC and heat.

16

Coating & Packing

Varnish, galvanizing or 3PE as specified; plywood cases or pallets, seaworthy export packing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a buttweld elbow and what does it do?
A buttweld elbow changes the direction of a pipeline — 45°, 90° or 180° — while keeping a smooth, full-wall flow path. It is welded directly to the pipe, so the joint is as strong as the pipe itself.
Long radius or short radius — which elbow should I choose?
Long radius (R = 1.5D) is the default choice: lower pressure drop and less erosion. Short radius (R = 1D) is used only where space is tight, such as inside skids or compact equipment.
What size range do you supply?
NPS 1/2″ to 48″ (DN15–DN1200). Seamless elbows up to NPS 24″; larger sizes are welded from plate. Schedules from Sch 10 to Sch 160, plus STD, XS and XXS.
What materials are available?
Carbon steel ASTM A234 WPB, low-temperature A420 WPL6, stainless A403 WP304/304L/316/316L, alloy A234 WP11/WP22/WP91, and duplex on request.
Seamless or welded elbows — which is right for my project?
For high-pressure or critical service, seamless up to NPS 24″ is preferred. Above that size, welded elbows are the economical standard and are fully covered by ASME B16.9.
How do you control quality on each elbow?
Every piece is dimension-checked against B16.9, with hardness and PMI sampling; hydrostatic or ultrasonic testing on request. Each order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate.
What surface finishes and coatings can you offer?
Bare with anti-rust oil or varnish as standard; FBE, 3LPE or hot-dip galvanizing available. Ends are beveled per ASME B16.25, ready for welding.
What is your MOQ and lead time?
MOQ is flexible — trial orders of a few pieces are welcome. Stock items ship in 7–15 days; production orders typically 20–35 days depending on size and quantity.
Can you make non-standard angles or custom radii?
Yes — 30°, 60° and other angles, 3D/5D long radii and fabricated mitre elbows can be made to your drawing.
What marking and documentation come with the goods?
Each elbow is marked with heat number, size, schedule and grade per MSS SP-25. You receive MTC 3.1 and packing list; SGS/BV/TÜV third-party inspection can be arranged.
