Steel Shaft

Steel shafts are critical mechanical components that transmit rotational power and motion between machine elements. They are found in virtually every mechanical system, from automotive engines and transmissions to industrial gearboxes and wind turbines.

Our steel shafts are manufactured from premium alloy steels including 42CrMo, 40Cr, 45#, and stainless grades. Each shaft undergoes precision turning, grinding, and optional heat treatment to meet strict dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements.

Manufacturing Process

Our precision machined parts are manufactured through a 12-step CNC machining process from certified steel bars, including heat treatment, precision grinding, and rigorous QC to meet tight tolerances and demanding performance requirements.

1

Raw Material Receiving & Testing

Certified forged or hot-rolled round bars are received with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certificates. Incoming inspection checks chemistry, hardness, UT cleanliness, and dimensional tolerance.

2

Sawing / CNC Cutting to Blanks

Bars are cut to blank lengths using CNC band saws or circular cold saws with ±0.5 mm length tolerance, minimizing material waste.

3

Rough Turning

Blanks are rough-turned on CNC lathes to remove scale, decarburization, and forging skin, leaving 1.5–2 mm stock per side for finishing operations.

4

Heat Treatment

Components undergo quenching and tempering (Q&T), carburizing, or induction hardening per specification to achieve case hardness (HRC 55–62) and core toughness.

5

Finish Turning & Boring

Precision CNC turning achieves OD/ID tolerances to IT6–IT7 with Ra 0.8–1.6 μm surface finish. Sleeve bushings are internally bored and honed to H7 tolerance.

6

Milling, Drilling & Keyway Cutting

Keyways, oil grooves, cross holes, and wrench flats are machined on CNC machining centers or using broaching/slotting machines.

7

Cylindrical & Surface Grinding

Critical diameters and sealing surfaces are precision ground to achieve Ra 0.2–0.4 μm and tight dimensional tolerances (≤0.01 mm).

8

Dynamic Balancing (Rotating Parts)

Shafts and rotating components are balanced on dynamic balancing machines to G2.5 or G6.3 grade to prevent vibration at operating speeds.

9

NDT (UT/MT/PT)

Critical components undergo ultrasonic testing for internal soundness and magnetic particle or dye penetrant testing to detect surface cracks.

10

Surface Treatment

Parts are blackened, zinc-plated, phosphated, or coated with anti-corrosion oil as required. Mating surfaces are protected with peelable coatings.

11

Dimensional & Hardness QC

100% dimensional inspection using micrometers, bore gauges, CMM; hardness testing (HRC/HRB/HV) on every batch; thread gauging for threaded connections.

12

Rust Prevention & Packaging

Parts are oiled with rust-preventive oil, wrapped in VCI anti-corrosion paper, packed in plywood cases with desiccant, and labeled per customer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shaft types do you manufacture?

Marine propulsion shafts (intermediate/thrust/propeller), turbine and generator rotor shafts, pump and compressor shafts, wind turbine main shafts, and automotive drive/axle shafts.

What size range can you produce?

Diameters from 50 mm to 1200 mm, lengths to 12 m, finished weights to 30+ tons.

What materials are used for shafts?

42CrMo4, 34CrNiMo6, 40Cr, 17CrNiMo6, stainless 410/420/304/316, and per-drawing grades with QT or normalized heat treatment.

How do you guarantee internal soundness?

100% ultrasonic testing per EN 10228-3/-4 with centerline inspection classes, plus stepwise mechanical testing to verify through-section properties.

Can you supply finish-machined and balanced shafts?

Yes — complete supply chain from forging, heat treatment, rough and finish machining, grinding, to dynamic balancing, delivered to drawing.

Do you provide classification society certification for marine shafts?

Yes — LR, DNV, ABS, BV witness testing and certification for material and dimensional acceptance.

What is the typical lead time?

8–16 weeks for forged-and-machined shafts depending on size; stock material shafts faster. Contact us with your drawing.

What is the minimum order quantity?

From single pieces — shafts are quoted per item based on size, material, and machining scope.

What tolerances can you hold?

Machined journals to IT6/IT7, surface finish to Ra 0.4, runout and concentricity per drawing; grinding to tighter on request.
