Standards Behind Fire Protection Pipe
Sprinkler and standpipe systems use carbon steel pipe made specifically for fire service: ASTM A795 (black and hot-dip galvanized welded/seamless pipe for fire protection), A53 Grade B and A135. The system itself is engineered to NFPA 13 (sprinklers), NFPA 14 (standpipes) and related standards; individual pipe is Listed (UL) or Approved (FM) so the installer can use it in listed systems.
Black vs Galvanized in Fire Systems
Black steel is the default for wet pipe systems. Galvanized pipe is restricted by NFPA 13 to specific system types and is mainly seen on dry and preaction arrangements — zinc corrosion products can plug sprinkler heads in wet systems over time. Never mix: mechanical grooved couplings and fittings are listed for specific wall thicknesses and end preparations.
| Item | Typical Practice |
|---|---|
| Sizes | 1 in to 12 in (DN25–DN300) |
| Walls | Sch 10 / Sch 40 (per listed combination) |
| Ends | Threaded (NPT), grooved (roll or cut), plain for welding |
| Marking | UL / FM mark plus ASTM A795 on every length |
| Certificates | UL certificate of conformity / FM approval letter on request |
Buying Fire Pipe from China: Checklist
Confirm the UL file number or FM approval is valid for the specific mill, not just for the brand name; approvals are mill-specific. Ask for recent UL/FM audit certificates, and require marking samples and a witness of dimensional checks at pre-shipment inspection. For projects, check whether the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) accepts the specific listing.
UL/FM listing follows the mill, not the trader. If your supplier cannot name the licensed mill producing the marked pipe, the “UL/FM” claim is not bankable.
Grooved, Threaded or Welded?
Grooved couplings dominate modern installations — fast, no hot work, and the roll-grooving process preserves wall thickness (cut grooving removes metal and is restricted to thicker walls). Threaded (NPT) remains standard on small sizes up to about 2 in, where wall must be Sch 40 to survive threading. Welded joints suit large-diameter mains but require hot-work permits and certified welders on site, which is why most sprinkler contractors reserve them for risers and mains.
UL vs FM: Similar Jobs, Different Rulebooks
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and FM Approvals both test pipe, fittings and devices against their own standards, and both are widely accepted by authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs). The practical difference is project-specific: many insurance-driven industrial specs (power, oil & gas, warehousing) are written around FM data sheets, while commercial construction often cites UL. The pipe itself may even carry both marks — what matters is that the specific mill’s listing covers the size, wall and end preparation you are buying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ASTM A53 instead of A795?
Only if that A53 production carries a valid UL listing for fire protection use. NFPA systems are built from listed products; bare A53 with no listing is not a substitute no matter how similar the chemistry looks.
Why is galvanized restricted in wet systems?
Zinc corrosion products flake in stagnant oxygenated water and migrate to sprinkler heads, blocking orifices. NFPA 13 therefore limits galvanized pipe to specific system types — black steel is the default for wet pipe.
What wall does threading require?
Standard Schedule 40 for sizes through 2 in; thinner walls (Sch 10) are roll-grooved instead. Threading thin-wall pipe destroys the joint — the listing does not cover it.
How do I verify a supplier’s claim?
Ask for the mill name and listing file number, then check it yourself in UL Product iQ or the FM Approvals guide. If the file does not name that mill for that size, walk away.
Listings follow the mill, not the middleman. Verify the file number in UL Product iQ or the FM guide before the PO — it takes five minutes and ends the argument.
