The Standards Behind Each Coating System
External anti-corrosion coatings are qualified by system-specific standards, and the region of your project usually decides which one governs. Knowing the map prevents the classic mistake of quoting “3PE” without naming the standard, wall surface preparation, or test regime.

| System | Governing Standards | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3PE (3-layer polyethylene) | DIN 30670 · ISO 21809-2 · GB/T 23257 · CSA Z245.21 | DIN 30670 is the de-facto world reference; ISO 21809-2 for petroleum pipelines; CSA in Canada |
| 3PP (3-layer polypropylene) | DIN 30678 | Higher temperature and abrasion resistance; offshore & directional drilling |
| FBE (fusion-bonded epoxy) | DIN 30671 · ISO 21809-2 FBE · CSA Z245.20 · AWWA C213 | Single-layer powder; AWWA C213 is the US waterworks route |
| 2PE (2-layer polyethylene) | DIN 30670 family (tape-free 2L) | Smaller bores and cost-driven projects |
| Internal epoxy / liquid | AWWA C210 · ISO 21809-3 | Potable and product lines; C210 liquid epoxy |
What the Standards Actually Control
Every coating standard specifies the same skeleton: surface preparation (Sa 2½ blast, profile/anchor pattern), materials (epoxy powder, adhesive, polyolefin layers with minimum thicknesses by diameter), process windows (preheat, quench), and acceptance tests — holiday detection (typically 5 kV per mm of coating, per standard tables), peel strength, cathodic disbondment, impact resistance and bendability. Difference between DIN 30670 and ISO 21809-2 is mostly in test parameter detail and classification levels — but your inspector enforces the one named in the PO.
PO formula: “3PE per DIN 30670, normal duty, total ≥ 2.5 mm, holiday test 100% at 5 kV/mm, cutback 150 ± 10 mm at bare ends.” Add ISO 21809-2 only if the project mandates it.
3PP: When Polypropylene Replaces Polyethylene
3PP (DIN 30678) swaps the outer PE for polypropylene: higher service temperature (roughly up to 110°C vs PE’s 60–70°C range), better abrasion and impact resistance, and better compatibility with high-temperature product pipelines and offshore reels. The trade-offs are higher material cost and stricter application window — expect a price premium over 3PE and confirm the coater’s 3PP track record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one mill certify both DIN 30670 and ISO 21809-2?
Most established Chinese coaters hold both routes; the tests overlap heavily. Name the governing standard in the PO and ask for its specific acceptance test report.
What is ‘cutback’ and why does it vary?
Cutback is the bare pipe end left uncoated for field welding — typically 150 mm, adjusted to the jointing method. Confirm it matches the field joint system before coating starts.
Which internal coating pairs with external 3PE?
Common: liquid epoxy per AWWA C210 or internal FBE/PE lining per project. Internal and external systems are separate specification lines — each needs its own standard named.
