The Standards Map for Forged Steel Products
A forged round bar, block or disc rarely ships with just one standard on the certificate — it carries a family: a general-delivery standard for the forging itself, a steel-grade standard defining chemistry and mechanical properties, a heat-treatment convention, and an ultrasonic testing standard. Chinese mills quote them together, and European or Japanese buyers check them together. This article walks the family map using the standards CREATEEL’s forged product lines actually work to.

The Grade Cross-Reference That Quotations Live On
Ninety percent of forged bar inquiries land on three steel families. The designations below are true equivalents in chemistry intent — always confirm mechanical scope in the receiving standard before claiming interchangeability on paper.
| Family | EN / DIN | GB/T 3077 | JIS G4105/G4051 | ASTM A29 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cr-Mo (workhorse) | 42CrMo4 (1.7225) | 42CrMo | SCM440 | 4140 |
| Cr-Mo (lower) | 34CrMo4 (1.7220) | 35CrMo | SCM435 | 4135 |
| Cr (basic QT) | 41Cr4 (1.7035) | 40Cr | SCr440 | 5140 |
| Ni-Cr-Mo (heavy section) | 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582) | 40CrNiMoA* | — (SNCM447) | 4340 / E4340 |
| Cr-V spring | 51CrV4 (1.8159) | 50CrVA (GB/T 1222) | SUP10 (G4801) | 6150 |
| Si-Mn spring | 55Si7 / 60SiCr7 (DIN 17221) | 60Si2Mn (GB/T 1222) | SUP6/SUP7 | 9260 |
| Bearing (through-hardening) | 100Cr6 (ISO 683-17 / 1.3501) | GCr15 (GB/T 18254) | SUJ2 | 52100 (A295) |
What the General-Delivery Standards Actually Regulate
ASTM A29/A29M is the umbrella: hot-wrought carbon and alloy steel bars in dozens of grades, covering chemistry, conditioning (hot-wrought, rough-turned, cold-drawn), tolerances per size class, and the test-certificate baseline. GB/T 3077 does the same job for China’s alloy structural steels and is the grade source behind 40Cr/42CrMo/35CrMo delivered by Chinese forgers. EN 10083 (parts 1–3) governs the QT steel family in Europe, and JIS G4051/G4105 the Japanese machine-structural and Cr-Mo grades.
Delivery Condition and Heat Treatment
The same bar ships in very different states: hot-forged/annealed (+A) for subsequent machining and customer heat treatment; quenched and tempered (+QT) to specified mechanical properties at a stated test piece size; normalized (+N) where grain refinement matters more than peak strength. The reference section size is critical — 42CrMo4 +QT at Ø100 mm carries different test results than at Ø300 mm, and the standards quote properties per diameter class. Ask for the actual test-piece diameter on the certificate, not just “+QT”.
UT Examination: A388 and SEP 1921
Forging soundness is proven by ultrasonic testing: ASTM A388 (straight and angle beam, reference flat-bottom-hole practice) in US-facing specs, SEP 1921 (the German car industry’s zone-classification method, e.g. “100% zone 3”) in European practice, and GB/T 6402 in Chinese certificates. For modules and discs, agree the UT class and recording threshold before production — re-testing a large forged block that fails an undisclosed criterion is a costly negotiation.
Tool & Die and Bearing Steels: The Specialised Corners
Tool and die blocks quote ISO 4957 / DIN 17350 / GB/T 1299 / ASTM A681 families — the classic mapping being H13 (A681) = 1.2344 (ISO 4957 X40CrMoV5-1) = 4Cr5MoSiV1 (GB/T 1299), delivered annealed (~≤ 229 HB typically) for customer hardening, or pre-hardened on request. Bearing steel quotes GCr15 (GB/T 18254) = 100Cr6 = SUJ2 = 52100, where low inclusion ratings (per GB/T 10561 / ASTM E45 method) and carbide uniformity matter as much as chemistry — ask for the metallographic report, not just the MTC.
PO formula that works across borders: “Forged round bar Ø450 mm, 42CrMo4+QT per EN 10083-3 / GB/T 3077 42CrMo, test piece Ø100 mm, UT per SEP 1921 zone 3, certificate EN 10204 3.1.” Every symbol removes a negotiation later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are 42CrMo4 and 4140 truly interchangeable?
Chemistry intent yes; delivery standards differ (EN 10083-3 vs ASTM A29). For a European-spec forging, quote 42CrMo4 with 3.1 to EN 10204; for US specs, 4140 per A29 with the A388 UT option. Cross-acceptance is common but must be written.
Why do spring steel certificates emphasize decarburization?
Decarburized surface layers kill fatigue life in leaf and coil springs. DIN 17221 and GB/T 1222 limit total decarburization depth — check the metallographic line on the MTC.
What separates GCr15 bearing bar from ordinary 52100 supply?
Inclusion and carbide ratings, plus contact-fatigue-oriented testing. Demand the GB/T 10561 / ASTM E45 cleanliness rating and, for critical grades, the additional hardenability and microstructure data.
What does “+QT at test piece Ø100” protect me from?
It forces the mill to heat-treat and test at your real section size — without it, properties quoted on 25 mm test bars may never exist in the core of a 400 mm block.
