If you buy structural steel for the European market — beams, hollow sections, plates, or structural pipe used in buildings — you will be asked for EN 10025 grades. S235, S275, S355 and S460 are the backbone of European construction, and they map only approximately onto the ASTM grades most Asian mills are used to quoting. Buyers who treat “S355” as a complete specification routinely end up with material that fails CE-marking documentation, lacks the right impact subgrade, or mixes hot-formed and cold-formed hollow sections in one structure. This guide gives you the working knowledge to order EN 10025 material correctly the first time.

How to Read an EN 10025 Designation
A grade like S355J2 encodes three decisions:
- S = structural steel; the number (235/275/355/460) is the minimum yield strength in MPa (for the thinnest range of the product form).
- The subgrade letter — JR, JO, J2, K2 — specifies the Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact requirement at a given test temperature: JR = 27 J at +20 °C, JO = 27 J at 0 °C, J2 = 27 J at −20 °C, K2 = 40 J at −20 °C. This matters for outdoor structures, bridges and anything exposed to European winters.
- Additional symbols: +N / +AR (normalised / as-rolled delivery condition, mostly on plates), M / ML (thermo-mechanically rolled grades in EN 10025-4), W (weathering steel, EN 10025-5).
Common mistake #1: ordering “S355” with no subgrade. Without a letter there is no guaranteed impact energy at all — some mills will supply JR by default, others anything they have. For structural work in most of Europe, J2 is the sensible default for outdoor exposure.
The Six Parts of EN 10025 — and Which One You Actually Need
| Part | Covers | Typical Products |
|---|---|---|
| EN 10025-2 | Non-alloy structural steels | Plates, sections, bars — S235/S275/S355 JR..K2 |
| EN 10025-3 | Normalized/normalized rolled weldable fine grain steels | S275N/NL, S355N/NL, S420N — low-temperature toughness |
| EN 10025-4 | Thermomechanical rolled weldable fine grain steels | S355M/ML, S460M/ML — heavy plate, welded structures |
| EN 10025-5 | Weathering steels | S235J0W, S355J2W — bridges, facades (Corten-type) |
| EN 10025-6 | Flat products of high yield strength quenched & tempered | S460Q..S960Q — cranes, trailers, wear structures |
| EN 10210 / EN 10219 | Hollow sections (hot-formed / cold-formed) | SHS/RHS/CHS in S235–S460 |
Note that hollow sections live in their own standards, not in EN 10025 itself — but the grade designations follow the same logic. Hot-formed (EN 10210) has better corner toughness and is preferred for fatigue and low temperature; cold-formed (EN 10219) is cheaper and straighter. Mixing them in one load path is a design decision, not a purchasing decision — never substitute silently.
Approximate Equivalents to ASTM Grades — and Their Limits
Asian mills quote ASTM fluently, so cross-references get abused. Working approximations:
| EN Grade | Closest ASTM | What Does Not Match |
|---|---|---|
| S235JR | A36 | A36 has a different yield basis (plate thickness), chemistry philosophy and no CVN guarantee by default |
| S275JR / S275JO | A572 Gr.42 (partial) | A572 is HSLA with columbium/vanadium; EN 10025-2 grades are non-alloy |
| S355J2 | A572 Gr.50 (partial) | CVN at −20 °C is an EN requirement with no ASTM default; carbon equivalent (CEV) limits differ |
| S355J2WP (weathering) | A588 / A242 | Cu/Ni/Cr balance differs; patina colour and performance near-chlorides differ |
| S460ML | A913 Gr.65 (sections) | Delivery condition (TM vs QST) and weldability ceilings differ |
The correct approach is the reverse of what most buyers do: specify the EN grade for EU projects, then ask the mill to certify against it — not supply “equivalent” ASTM and promise it will pass. If a designer has specified S355J2H for a hollow section, an ASTM A500 Grade C tube is not an acceptable substitute, whatever the chemical similarity.
CE Marking: The Part Buyers Forget
Structural steel components used in construction works in the EU fall under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR): the product needs a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and CE marking against the relevant harmonized standard — EN 10025 for plates/bars, EN 10210/10219 for hollow sections. The mill (or the importer placing the product on the market) must have a Factory Production Control system and issue a DoP per product. Practical consequences:
- Ask for the DoP reference and CE label together with the EN 10204 3.1 MTC — the MTC alone does not satisfy CPR for construction use.
- If you import and sell onward in the EU, you may become the party legally responsible for CE marking — understand this before choosing your supply model.
- For execution of the steelwork itself, the fabricator works under EN 1090-1/-2 — see our EN 1090 & CE marking guide.
Five Ordering Mistakes That Cost Money
- No subgrade specified → material arrives with no usable CVN guarantee; the structural engineer rejects it.
- Wrong hollow-section standard → EN 10219 supplied where EN 10210 was designed (corners crack in cold climates under fatigue).
- CEV not checked → S355 with high carbon equivalent welds badly; thick sections crack without preheat. Specify CEV limits for thick weldments.
- Variation on thickness effect → yield decreases with thickness; a “355” plate at 80 mm certifies 330–340 MPa minimum. Check the tables, not the headline number.
- Missing DoP/CE documents → goods clear customs but cannot legally go into the structure; re-papering from overseas costs weeks.
