What ASME B16.9 Covers
ASME B16.9 governs factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings — elbows, tees, reducers, caps, stub ends and crosses — in sizes from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48. These fittings weld directly to pipe with a matching bevel, giving a continuous metal path for pressure systems. Forged socket-weld and threaded fittings are a different standard (B16.11), and smaller wrought pieces fall under B16.28 — do not mix them on one drawing callout.

The Common Types
| Fitting | Variants | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Elbow | 90° LR (1.5D) / SR (1D); 45° | Change direction |
| Tee | Equal; reducing | Branch line |
| Reducer | Concentric; eccentric | Change size (eccentric keeps bottom flat at pipe racks) |
| Cap | Butt-weld | Close line end |
| Stub end | Long/short pattern | Lap joint with backing flange |
Materials and Ratings
Carbon steel fittings are typically ASTM A234 WPB; low-temperature service uses A420 WPL6; stainless uses A403 WP304/304L/316/316L; alloy grades follow A234 WP11/WP22/WP91. B16.9 fittings are rated by matching the schedule of the attached pipe — they have no separate pressure class of their own, which is why the PO must state schedule (or wall) explicitly, e.g. “Elbow 90 LR, 6 in Sch 40, A234 WPB, BW ends”.
B16.9 fittings inherit their pressure rating from the matching pipe schedule. Order by size + schedule + material grade, or the quote you receive will assume something.
Inspection Points for B16.9 Orders
Check: bevel face and root face per B16.9 tolerances, wall thickness at the critical extrados of elbows (thin spot), ovality at ends, and heat-number marking. MTC per EN 10204 3.1 with heat-level chemistry is standard; for sour or critical service add hardness surveys and, for WP91, the heat-treatment record. Dimensions are where cheap fittings fail — an out-of-tolerance bevel doubles the welder’s time on site.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between LR and SR elbows?
Long-radius (1.5×NPS) has lower flow resistance and is the default for process piping; short-radius (1×NPS) fits tight layouts but costs more pressure drop and erosion — use it only where space forces it.
Why eccentric reducers at pipe racks?
Laid flat-side-down they keep the pipe rack bottom line level and avoid dead pockets at drains; concentric reducers are fine on vertical lines.
Do fittings need hydrotesting?
B16.9 itself does not require hydro per piece — pressure integrity is proven with the piping system test. What the certificate must show is chemistry, mechanicals, heat treatment and NDT where specified.
