How Seamless Steel Pipe Is Made: Piercing, Elongation and Testing

From Round Bloom to Seamless Pipe

Seamless pipe starts as a solid round bloom (continuous-cast or rolled). The defining step is rotary piercing (the Mannesmann process): two counter-rotating rolls pull the heated bloom onto a pointed mandrel, opening a bore without welding. The hollow shell then passes through an elongator — plug mill, MPM or pilger mill — to reach close to final size, followed by sizing/stretch-reducing mills, cooling, straightening and cutting.

Hot-Finished vs Cold-Drawn

Aspect Hot-finished Cold-drawn
Surface & tolerance Scale, wider tolerances Smooth, tight (EN 10305 class)
Size range Common up to 16 in and above Smaller bores, precision work
Typical use Line pipe, boiler tube, structural Hydraulic cylinders, precision mechanics

Cold drawing also work-hardens the tube, so a stress-relief or anneal follows when the application requires specified mechanical properties (e.g. EN 10305-1/+C vs +A conditions).

Testing That Proves Integrity

Standard practice: chemical and mechanical tests per heat, hydrostatic pressure test or 100% NDT in lieu (ultrasonic and/or eddy current per API 5L/ASTM A106 scopes), plus visual and dimensional inspection. Sour-service, high-pressure and boiler orders add hardness surveys, grain-size and, for OCTG, full-body UT. Ask for the NDT scope in writing — “tested” without a method named is not a specification.

Seamless buys you a pressure path with no weld seam: the right choice for high pressure, high temperature and critical service — welded ERW/LSAW wins on cost for the rest. Match the process to the service, not to habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is seamless more expensive?

The piercing/elongation route consumes more energy and yields less from each bloom, and heavy-wall sizes need large presses. The premium buys the uninterrupted metal path that high-pressure design relies on.

Can seamless pipe be truly seam-free?

Yes in the sense that there is no weld joint; minor laminations are controlled by NDT acceptance criteria, which is exactly why UT scope matters on critical orders.

Which standard for precision hydraulic tube?

EN 10305 (part 1 cold-drawn seamless, part 4 hydraulic) with H8/H9 honed bores for cylinder barrels — the tolerances are entirely different from A106-style pressure pipe.

CREATEEL supplies seamless pipe to ASTM A106/A333/A335, API 5L PSL1/PSL2 and EN 10216 with full NDT documentation.
