EN 10216 vs EN 10217: Seamless and Welded Pressure Tubes, Parts and Test Categories

One Job, Two Execution Routes

EN 10216 covers seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes; EN 10217 covers the same job in welded execution. Both are divided into parts by service temperature: –1 for ambient, –2 for elevated temperature (the boiler/power suffix), –4 for low temperature, –5 for stainless. When a European drawing says “P265GH tube to EN 10216-2”, every part of that sentence carries meaning.

Part Service Example Steel Execution
-1 Ambient temperature P235TR1 / TR2 10216 seamless; 10217 welded
-2 Elevated temperature P265GH, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5 Boiler and hot piping
-4 Low temperature P215NL, P275NL1 Notch-tough steels
-5 Stainless 1.4301/1.4404/1.4462 Austenitic and duplex

Test Categories I, II and III

Both standards grade quality by test category: Category I gets the base nondestructive scope, Category II adds more, Category III mandates 100% NDT of the weld (welded) or the full test regime (seamless). The category is chosen from the pressure/temperature design envelope — it must appear on the PO, because the same steel name can be supplied in different categories at different prices.

How This Maps to ASME Practice

EN 10216-2 P265GH is the customary counterpart to ASME SA106 B / SA105-class carbon steels, and 16Mo3 or 13CrMo4-5 face off against SA209 T1 / SA213 T11 respectively — comparable, but not automatically interchangeable: allowable stresses, tolerance systems and test regimes differ. Cross-standard substitution needs the design engineer’s written approval, not a mill’s opinion.

Reading a European tube callout: EN 10216-2 + steel name (P265GH) + test category + dimensions. Any missing element is an invitation for the wrong supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which execution is default for pressure piping?

Neither — the designer decides. Welded (10217) is cheaper and fine for most ambient service; seamless (10216) is chosen for higher integrity needs, heavy walls and small bores.

What does the TR1/TR2 suffix mean in 10216-1?

It defines the NDT/inspection scope on seamless tubes (TR2 is the tighter variant). Match it to your test category requirement.

Can I buy EN 10217-2 instead of EN 10216-2 to save cost?

Often yes for ambient-to-moderate service — subject to the design code accepting welded execution at the given thickness and category. Get it in writing.
