ASTM A252 Pipe Pile Guide: Grades 1/2/3, Execution and What to Specify

ASTM A252 in One Paragraph

ASTM A252 is the standard for welded and seamless steel pipe piles — the driven or drilled foundation pipe used in wharves, bridges, buildings and offshore structures. It defines three strength grades and leaves almost everything else (coating, end condition, splicing) to the project specification, which is why reading A252 correctly matters.

Grade Min Yield (MPa) Min Tensile (MPa)
Grade 1 205 310
Grade 2 240 415
Grade 3 310 455

Grades and Execution

Grade 2 is the default for most land and marine piling; Grade 3 appears on high-load or deep-water projects. A252 pipe comes ERW, LSAW or SSAW — the standard does not restrict the weld process, so the engineer picks based on diameter and wall: large-diameter marine pipe piles are typically LSAW/SSAW, while mid-range sizes run ERW. Straightness and roundness limits are the practical quality battle on pipe piles — agree them with your inspector before production, not after arrival.

Open End, Closed End, and What A252 Does Not Say

A252 covers the steel cylinder only. Points buyers must handle in the PO: end preparation (plain, bevel for splicing, or driving point), splicing method (welded joint dimensions), coatings (concrete fill, epoxy, or none), and length policy (single lengths vs spliced doubles). European projects may instead call EN 10219 S355J2H or EN 10225 (offshore) — different chemistry routes to the same job.

For pipe piles, the standard is the floor, not the spec. The driving stresses, splice details and straightness tolerances in your project documents are what actually govern production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use A500 instead of A252 for piling?

A500 covers structural hollow sections with tighter dimensional classes but is not a piling standard; many inspectors will accept it, but the project spec normally names A252 (US) or EN 10219 (EU). Follow the spec.

Why is Grade 3 less common?

Grade 3’s extra yield (310 MPa) usually costs more in chemistry than the structural gain is worth — most designs hit capacity limits on soil, not steel.

Does A252 require hydrotesting?

No — pipe piles are not pressure vessels. NDT and dimensional control govern; hydro is only added by special project requirement.
