The X-Series: What the Number Means
API 5L grades are named after minimum yield strength in ksi: X52 = 52,000 psi (360 MPa) minimum yield. PSL1 runs from A25 through X70; PSL2 extends to X80 (with X90–X120 in supplementary practice). Moving up a grade buys strength for higher pressure or thinner wall — but each step also tightens chemistry, carbon equivalent and (in PSL2) mandatory CVN toughness.

PSL1 vs PSL2 Follows You into Every Grade
The grade number is only half the designation — PSL level defines the rules: PSL2 caps carbon and manganese, mandates carbon equivalent limits, requires CVN impact testing, and adds hardness control. A “X52 PSL1” and “X52 PSL2” are different products at different prices. Sour wells and H2S pipelines then take PSL2 with Annex H on top (see our NACE MR0175 guide).

ISO 3183 is the ISO-family line pipe standard functionally aligned with API 5L (L245 = B, L360 = X52, L415 = X60, L450 = X65, L485 = X70, L555 = X80). China’s GB/T 9711 tracks the same grade ladder. On international tenders, quote the API designation with the ISO/GB equivalent in brackets — it prevents the classic mismatch where one party reads X60 and the other L415.
Specify as: API 5L X65 PSL2, seamless or LSAW/ERW (size-dependent), annex requirements, plus CVN test temperature. A bare “X65” leaves every important decision to the seller.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is higher grade always better?
No — higher grades trade weldability and cost for strength. Distribution systems are usually cheapest in B/X42; X70/X80 only pays off on long, high-pressure trunk lines where wall thinning multiplies over kilometres.
Does ISO 3183 PSL2 match API 5L PSL2 exactly?
They are aligned in intent with minor editorial differences. Most international projects accept either; the PO should name one governing standard.
Which grades can be sour service?
Any PSL2 grade can carry Annex H requirements, but economics favor B–X65 for sour service; hardness limits bind first at higher grades.
