Steel Pipe Export Packing That Survives the Ocean: Bundles, Bevels, Rust and Records

Packing Is Part of the Product

A pipe that arrives dented, rusted or with a smashed bevel is a failed pipe — whatever its mill certificate says. Export packing is where mills save pennies and pay back in claims. This article collects the practices that work for carbon steel pipe moving in containers and break-bulk, written from the shipping side rather than the catalog side.

Worker checking strapped pipe bundles on a flatbed trailer

Threat in transit Where it happens Packing counter-measure
End/bevel damage Handling, stacking, sling bites Plastic or steel end caps / protectors on every pipe; bevel protectors on prepared ends
Surface rust Ocean humidity, condensation cycling VCI paper or film on machined/threaded surfaces; dry containers, desiccant bags; avoid salt-soaked dunnage
Bundle collapse Lashing, tier loads in hold Steel strapping (not PET for heavy pipe) with edge protectors; one-piece skids under bundles
Ovality/dents on thin-wall tube Cross-stacking, tube-on-tube Maximum bundle height rules; timber separation layers; no loose mixed sizes in one bundle
Contamination Previous cargo, holds, containers Clean-swept containers, liner bags for high-finish tube, photos before stuffing

Container Shipments (the Small/Lot Default)

  • Bundle discipline: one size per bundle, weight-matched to container floor limits (a 20 ft has ~28 t payload but floor point loads matter — timber cradles spread it).
  • Two skids minimum under each bundle, pipe strapped to skids, skid timber heat-treated and stamped (ISPM 15) where the destination requires it.
  • Length vs container: 5.8 m pipe fits a 20 ft OT (open top); 11.8–12 m needs flat-rack or break-bulk. Cutting to 5.8 m for containers is the classic trade-off against DRL customers — decide before ordering.
  • Stuffing plan: heaviest bundles on the floor, no pyramid stacks, dunnage bags for the last meter of space, door-end brace. Photos of stuffing sequence are cheap insurance on a damage claim.

Break-Bulk and Bulk Carrier Shipments

  1. Sling points: band pipe into bundles with internal dunnage so slings can’t crush the bottom layer; spreader beams for long bundles.
  2. Tier separation: timber strips between tiers — direct pipe-on-pipe stacking ships ovality to your customer.
  3. Coated pipe (3PE/FBE): no steel strapping against coating — soft slings, rubber-protected cradles, end ramps on pipe corners; coating repair at destination costs far more than packing.
  4. Galvanized: avoid white-rust by dry dunnage and ventilation; never leave wet timber against zinc.
  5. Hold inspection: request hold cleanliness certification and photograph before loading; free práctica at some ports, cheap surveyor at all of them.

The packing list on the B/L must match reality: bundle counts, pipe counts, lengths and gross/net weights photographed at stuffing. Claims are won with photos and weights, not with adjectives.

Marks, Documents and the Last 5%

  • Stencilling per bundle: order no., size/standard, heat range, bundle weight, piece count, lifting point icons — your customer’s warehouse will thank you and reorder.
  • Documents in the packing: a waterproof pouch on bundle #1 with packing list and MTC index speeds customs and site receipt.
  • Machined/threaded items (casings with couplings, machined bars): individual VCI + cap, boxed, ‘Do not stack’ — the cheapest failures to prevent, the most expensive to discover at the rig.
  • Container desiccants for ocean crossings over 3 weeks, and containers stored shade-side, doors cracked last minute only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays for special packing — buyer or seller?

Whatever the Incoterm and PO say. Standard seaworthy packing is included in FOB/CFR pricing as a matter of course; non-standard requests (individual VCI wrapping, crating, bevel protectors on 100% of pipes) are priced items — agree them before, not at loading.

Can 12 m pipes go in a container?

No — 40 ft containers take 11.9 m max only with open tops and overhang tricks rejected by most lines. DRL pipe moves on flat racks (two 40 ft FRs for 12 m pieces) or break-bulk.

How do you prevent white rust on galvanized pipe?

Dry dunnage, no wet-timber contact, ventilation, and chromate-passivated or oiled finish from the galvanizer. Bundles wrapped in plastic only if vents are left for breathing — sealed wrap in sun causes condensation.

Is PET strapping acceptable for pipe?

For light, short bundles yes; for heavy steel pipe, steel strapping with edge protectors remains the standard — PET relaxes over weeks at sea.

What photos should I ask the factory for at loading?

Container interior before stuffing, each bundle stencilled, strapping and skids, dunnage placement, sealed container with seal number readable, and the final weight ticket.
