Wall Thickness Tolerance Quick Table: API 5L, ASTM, EN and GB/T 8163 Compared

Why the Tolerance Line Decides Your Real Cost

Two mills can both “supply 219.1 × 8 mm” and deliver meaningfully different pipes: one cut to nominal wall, one cutting near minimum tolerance to save steel. Over a 20-tonne order the difference is real money — and sometimes a failed pressure design. This page collects the working wall (and key OD) tolerances for the standards carbon steel pipe is actually ordered to, so you can write the tolerance you need instead of receiving whatever the mill prefers.

Two tolerance systems exist and they are not interchangeable: nominal-wall systems (API 5L, GB/T) judge the wall at any point against nominal ± %, while minimum-wall systems (many ASTM specs) let the pipe go 12.5% under nominal provided the minimum design wall is met. Same 8 mm nominal, different legal minimums.

API 5L (46th Edition) — Wall and OD Tolerances

Body tolerances; pipe ends carry separate, tighter bands. Weld area excluded from wall plus-tolerance.

Parameter Seamless (SMLS) Welded
Wall ≤ 4.0 / 5.0 mm ≤4.0: +0.6 / −0.5 mm ≤5.0: ±0.5 mm
Mid range wall 4.0–25 mm: +15% / −12.5% 5–15 mm: ±10% t
Thick wall ≥25 mm: +3.7 / −3.0 mm (or ±0.1t, greater applies) ≥15 mm: ±1.5 mm
OD < 60.3 −0.8 / +0.4 mm −0.8 / +0.4 mm
OD 60.3–168.3 ±0.75% D ±0.75% D
OD 168.3–610 ±0.75% D (max ±3.2 mm) ±0.75% D (max ±3.2 mm)
OD > 610 ±1% D ±1% D

ASTM General Requirements (A530) and A106

  • Wall: most ASTM pipe specs work on minimum wall — wall at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under nominal (A106 among them); plus tolerance per the size table.
  • OD: ±0.5% class for most sizes via the A530 table, with tighter end tolerances (e.g. NPS 2–3/8 and up: ±0.79 mm at ends for mid sizes).
  • Consequence: ordering “8.0 mm wall A106” legally permits 7.0 mm measured wall. If your design needs true 8.0 mm, order 8.8 mm nominal or state a tighter tolerance.

EN 10216 / 10217 (pressure) and EN 10219 / 10210 (structural)

Standard OD tolerance Wall tolerance (typical)
EN 10216-1/-2 seamless ±1% D (size classes; tighter at ends for many sizes) ±10% t class; small-t sizes carry absolute-mm bands
EN 10217 welded pressure ±1% D class ±10% t class (weld-zone relief applies)
EN 10219 / 10210 structural hollows ±1% D, min ±0.5 mm ±10% t

GB/T 8163-2018 (fluid seamless) — verified detail

Route OD Wall
Hot-rolled (hot-expanded) ±1% D or ±0.5 mm, greater D ≤ 102: ±12.5%S or ±0.4 mm; D > 102 by S/D ratio: ±15%S (S/D ≤ 0.05), ±12.5%S (0.05–0.10), +12.5/−10%S (>0.10); hot-expanded +17.5/−12.5%S
Cold-drawn (cold-rolled) ±0.75% D or ±0.3 mm, greater t ≤ 3: +15/−10%S (or ±0.15 mm); 3–10: +12.5/−10%S; >10: ±10%S

How to Write the Tolerance into a PO

  1. Name the standard + edition (“API 5L 46th PSL2”, not “API pipe”).
  2. State wall basis: “nominal wall per standard” vs “minimum wall 8.0 mm” — they price differently and inspect differently.
  3. Tighten deliberately: “wall tolerance +12.5/−8%” or “OD end tolerance ±0.5%” is purchasable; mills quote a small premium for tightened bands (the negative tolerance is what costs steel, so ask which side you tighten).
  4. Cross-check weight: theoretical kg/m uses nominal wall; a lighter-than-theory shipment tells you the tolerance was used against you.

API 5L values above follow the 46th-edition tolerance tables; EN and GB rows are size-class summaries — the size tables inside each standard rule in any conflict. Always cite the edition you ordered against.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standard has the tightest wall tolerance?

EN family (±10% class) and welded API 5L mid-range (±10%) are tighter than seamless API/ASTM (−12.5%). GB/T cold-drawn >10 mm matches ±10%.

Can I order ‘minimum wall’ API 5L?

API 5L works on nominal wall; minimum-wall orders are handled by specifying a tighter negative tolerance (e.g. −7.5%) or by sizing up.

Does the tolerance apply to the weld area on ERW pipe?

The plus tolerance typically does not apply at the weld trim zone (API 5L); the minus tolerance still governs everywhere.

Why did my 12 m bundle weigh 4% light against theory?

Wall at the low side of tolerance across the whole order — legal but thin. Bundle weigh-in is the fastest tolerance audit; do it on arrival.

Do tolerances differ for hot-expanded pipe?

Yes — GB/T 8163 gives hot-expanded +17.5/−12.5%S, the loosest common band. If your spec needs uniform wall, exclude hot-expanded supply explicitly.
